In honor of Yelm’s 100th anniversary, we are thrilled to announce the restoration of the Yelm History Project! This cherished program, originally created by Yelm High School teacher Ed Bergh, is coming back to life, offering an opportunity for our community to reconnect with its roots and celebrate the stories that shaped our town.
The Yelm History Project was a treasure trove of local history, exploring everything from the sweeping prairies and ancient forests to the Nisqually River and the towering majesty of Mt. Rainier. It delved deep into the legacy of the Nisqually people, honoring their enduring connection to the land and their significant influence on the culture and heritage of the region. The project also highlighted the lives of settlers who cultivated the prairie, logged the forests, and built the community we know today.
For years, the Yelm History Project brought these stories to life, engaging students and community members alike with the rich tapestry of our shared past. Sadly, the original project was lost in 2022, leaving a void for those who cherished learning about Yelm’s history.
Now, Alumni of Yelm is proud to revive this important initiative as part of our efforts to commemorate Yelm’s centennial. Over the coming months, we will reintroduce articles, photographs, and stories that celebrate the unique history of our town. From yearbook highlights to school memories, from local legends to fascinating facts about the people and events that shaped Yelm, this project will be a living archive for all to enjoy.
This restoration is about more than nostalgia—it’s about preserving the legacy of Yelm for future generations. Our goal is to honor the past while inspiring curiosity and pride in our community’s unique story. Whether you’ve lived in Yelm for decades or just recently joined our community, there’s something for everyone to discover and celebrate.
Stay tuned as we share updates, articles, and special features on the Yelm History Project in the months ahead. Together, we can bring this important piece of Yelm’s heritage back to life and celebrate 100 years of community, culture, and history.
Follow our journey here and on social media as we reconnect with our past to honor Yelm’s legacy. If you have stories, photos, or memories to share, we’d love to hear from you! Let’s make history together.
